Case Study: Analysis of a small Etsy handmade shop

  • Shop age: approx. 5 years

  • Listings: approx. 20-25 products

  • Product category: Children's room decor (macrame, personalized elements)

Analysis results

The analysis revealed several structural problems:

1. Unclear positioning

The shop offered various types of decoration (macramé, pennants, rainbows, etc.), without a clear core theme.

As a result, it wasn't immediately clear to Etsy or to buyers what the shop stood for.

3. Low differentiation of product images

Several listings had very similar images.
This made it difficult for buyers to quickly identify differences between the products.

2. Revise keyword strategy

Instead of very general terms, more emphasis should be placed on using search terms that combine occasion and target group (e.g., gift for birth, personalized children's room decor).

Many product titles used very broad terms such as:

  • "Macrame Rainbow"

  • "Children's room decor"

These keywords are highly competitive and make it difficult for small shops to become visible.

Recommended optimization strategy

The following strategic approaches were recommended as part of the analysis:

1. Clearer niche positioning

A stronger focus on a clearly defined product line, e.g., personalized children's room decor in boho style.

3. Improve product presentation

Additional image types were recommended, such as:

  • Detailed shots

  • Size comparison

  • Use in the household

This helps buyers to better visualize the product.

The aim of the analysis

The aim of the analysis was to give the shop a clearer strategic direction and to prioritize the most important optimization points.

Smaller shops in particular benefit from focusing their energy on a few key improvements, rather than making many changes at once.
